Off-duty Centurion officer secures arrest

The officer had been making his way home when he witnessed the suspect and members of the public struggling beside the road.

An off-duty police officer going home from night shift assisted in the arrest of a suspected armed robber in Centurion last week.

Constable Martin van der Westhuizen was on his way home when he witnessed members of the public and a man struggling in Jean Avenue, according to police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

“Upon closer inspection, he found the man had attempted to rob one of the people with a firearm.”

Van der Westhuizen intervened and was able to arrest the man and confiscate two replica firearms in his possession.

“The man is facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, pointing of a firearm and armed robbery,” Miller said.

Meanwhile, the Lyttelton police have once again, urged locals not to drink and drive after four people were arrested in Elarduspark on Friday evening, for drunken driving.

“Lyttelton police together with local CPF and private security companies held roadblocks in the area as part of a visible policing operation,” Miller said.

“During the roadblocks, the four motorists were arrested after it was determined they were under the influence of alcohol.”

Miller again urged residents to make use of e-hailing services or designated driver options instead of driving home drunk.

“If you know you are going to be drinking then make use of a taxi service,” he said.

“Motorists driving under the influence will face dire consequences including a trip to the local police station.

“Only once the police are certain they have sobered up will the motorist be released.”
