Lengthy jail term for east killer

The 24-year-old robbed four people off R9500 and murdered one in Mamelodi east.

The Gauteng police management have welcomed the life and 45 year-sentence the Gauteng North high court in Pretoria handed down to a Mamelodi murderer on Monday.

Mahlatsi Phineas Maloma (25) had earlier been convicted of one person and the attempted murder of another three during a robbery at a tuck shop in Mamelodi East extension 17 in 2017.

The Gauteng police said Maloma had robbed four people of R9 500 in cash then shot them.

They said detective Mosoatsi Waycliff Tshabalala had visited the crime scene to collect all the necessary evidence then traced and arrested the suspect all within a few days.

“During the arrest, Maloma was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm he was believed to have used in the crime,” the police said.

Maloma was sentenced to life imprisonment, for the murder, eight years each for the three attempted murder, 15 years for the armed robbery, five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and a year for the possession of ammunition.
