North car guard saves the day
When the Verster family returned to their car they realised the key was missing.
A car guard at the Kolonnade mall in Pretoria north was given the thumbs up and will be named employee of the month after saving the day and helping a shopper.
Gert Verster, former distribution manager at Capital Media thanked his lucky stars this past Monday after he lost his car keys at the Kolonnade Shopping Centre’s parking area.
Verster and his family visited the mall on 12 August at around 10.00 to do shopping.
When the Verster family returned to their car in the parking lot about three hours later, Verster released his car keys were missing.

“There is hole in my pocket and I initially thought the keys could have fallen through the hole,” Verster told Rekord.
They then went back into the mall to all the shops they were in to search for the missing keys.
“On the way back to my car, a car guard called and handed me my keys, saying he had kept them safe for me.”
The car guard explained to Verster that he had left his car keys sticking out of the lock on the boot of the car when they went inside the mall.
“Before going into the mall I took off my jacket and put it away in the boot of the car. I must have forgotten it then,” said Verster.
Verster said he was very grateful for the car guard who kept his keys and car safe because there were valuable items in his car at the time.
“I admire his dignity. It is honesty that is no longer seen daily.”
Kolonnade marketing manager Monique Jansen van Rensburg said the car guard, Phineas Mathau, was awarded earlier this year for a similar act.

His was named employee of the month in January where his picture is displayed on their “Wall of Fame” between the centre management office and security department.
“We are thankful that our staff is recognised by the public and appreciate that Gert took the time to compliment Phineas. Every month we nominate a member of staff as employee of the month and they receive an allocation, a certificate and a gift card. Phineas will certainly again be acknowledged this month,” Jansen van Rensburg said.
