Popular mini cricket comes to Eersterust
The community is benefiting from these programmes as they keep the young ones busy.
The KFC mini cricket continues to grow and impact young cricketing lives in the community.
On Tuesday afternoon, four schools competed in the tournament at the Fred Magardie Primary School in Eersterust.
Ian Morton, who has co-ordinated mini-cricket for 25 years, said these kinds of games helped the young ones to stay disciplined and active after school.
“We had four schools from Eersterust which took part – Fred Magardie, PS Fourie, Norridge and Nantes Primary. We had 40 children playing cricket, but the previous game we had 85 in total so more kids are getting involved in cricket which is good for the community,” he said.

“Mini-cricket is fun and the kids enjoy it to the fullest. This initiative helps develop skills of players and has in the past produced a lot of Northerns players. The community is benefiting from these programmes as it keeps the young ones busy. The game itself helps them stay focused and the risk of drug abuse are minimised.
“KFC mini-cricket remains one of the best sports development programmes in the world and continues to be an empowering opportunity for the children through their engagement and meeting with their Proteas’ heroes,” Morton said.
“The programme continues to allow young boys and girls to engage in teamwork as well as understand the importance of discipline, teamwork, tolerance and fair play.”
