Police raid nets dagga at east school

“There is a sense that the drugs are being used on school premises and outside the school and that is illegal,

The police have confirmed that dagga was found during a raid at an east school on Wednesday morning. Spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the police found more than 150g of cannabis and a “weed crusher” in a school locker and bag during a O Kae Molao raid to restore law and order to communities.

“There is a sense that the drugs are being used on school premises and outside the school, and that is illegal,” he said.

He said the manner in which the dagga was packaged suggested that someone at the school was distributing. “The weed crusher is usually used to crush the plant into small pieces and then packaged,” he said. About 10 classrooms, as well as bags and lockers, were searched but no learner was arrested.

Sepato sent a strong warning to learners who were using dagga and other substances at school. “The repercussions of being arrested will affect learners for the rest of their lives,” he said. “They might have a criminal record which will affect their careers.”

He said the police often held awareness campaigns at schools to educate learners about the negative effects of using drugs and being involved in criminal activity. “We are experiencing a high volume of violence in schools; teachers being attacked by learners, learners hurting and bullying one another,” he said.

“It is important that we teach them about the consequences that follow if they choose not to be law abiding citizens.” Sepato said the police were building relationships with different schools who often alerted them to problems at schools.

“Learners are at school to learn and build their future, the use of drugs will derail them.” In separate incidents, the police raided two suspected drug dens east of Pretoria.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba when the police executed a search warrant at a house in Faerie Glen. “they found dagga plants, dagga in zip lock bags and a homemade firearm”.

He said in the children’s bedroom, THC lollies, sweets, fudge and space cakes were found.

Mahamba said two males and two females were arrested for manufacturing and dealing in dagga and “the three children in the house taken to a place of safety”.

Mahamba said during the arrest, the police obtained information about a second drug house in Garsfontein.

“Officers obtained another search warrant and headed to the house. Two suspects were found in the house. After searching the house, it was clear to the officers that drugs were manufactured in the house according to the evidence found.”

He said the police found drug-manufacturing equipment, and drugs such as crystal meth, crack cocaine, dagga and dagga plants.

“They also found four rifles and ammunition. Cash to the amount of R15 800 was confiscated and the two suspects were arrested for manufacturing and dealing in drugs.”
