North businessman in court after mob justice deaths

"They poured petrol on the vehicle and set it alight."

A Hammanskraal businessman has been arrested for allegedly inciting the mob justice that resulted in two men being torched to death.

Police spokesperson Captain Samuel Sebola said it was believed that the Mmotla restaurant owner received a tip-off that he would be robbed of the money he collected at his stokvel and given the description of the robbers.

Sebola said the man then allegedly rallied up a group of young men to lie in wait for the would-be attackers.

He said when the police arrived at the scene, five men lay legs tied-up, being assaulted.

“The police pleaded with him to stop the assault and even arranged an ambulance to take the injured men to hospital.

“Before it could arrive, a large number of community members arrived and took two of the victims, put them in the boot of a silver Hyundai i10, poured petrol on the vehicle and set it alight. The vehicle and the two males were burnt beyond recognition,” he said.

Sebola said the police rescued the remaining assault victims and rushed them to Jubilee hospital.

He said the businessman was arrested on Monday and would face two counts of murder and three of attempted murder.

He was expected to appear in the Moretele magistrate’s court on Thursday.
