North learner recovers after cycling accident

Young JP was on his way to a night bicycle riding event when the incident occurred.

A Hoërskool Montana learner was airlifted to hospital after he was struck by a car on Dr Swanepoel Road on Wednesday. The 14-year-old JP de Jager was on his bicycle when the accident happened.

He suffered injuries to his spine and had to receive advanced life support interventions on the scene. “The patient was airlifted via Netcare911’s medical helicopter to a Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg,” Medi Edge First Responders said.

According to JP’s mother Michelle de Jager, her son was on his way to a night bike riding event when the incident occurred around 17:20. “We are really grateful that the accident wasn’t any worse and that JP didn’t sustain any life-threatening injuries,” said Michelle.

“He’s really improving by the hour and receiving the best medical care. He had a concussion from the fall, has a laceration on his left kidney, and two small bones were damaged in his back, but that’s all.”

“We are extremely grateful to the driver of the car, as he remained with JP on the scene until the ambulance service arrived. He was very concerned about JP and remained in contact with me during the entire night to check up on him.”

JP is currently still in ICU, but will be moving to recovery in only a few days. He is expected to stay in the hospital for roughly 7 – 10 days. Michelle would like to urge all motorists on the road to respect all pedestrians and cyclists who use the road.

“We don’t feel that the driver of the car or anyone else is to blame for what happened. It was an accident and we want people to just be more vigilant on what happens on our roads. “We would like to thank our community, all of the calls and text messages we received from people wishing us well and offering their support. We trust JP will be up and running quite soon,” she concludes.
