Off-duty cop saves woman in the north
A metro police constable thwarted a hijacking on his way home.
The Tshwane metro police have applauded an off-duty officer who thwarted a hijacking north of the city on Thursday evening. The constable was travelling on Brits Road near the R80 Mabopane Highway on-ramp around 20:40. As he approached the red traffic light, he noticed a female motorist ahead.
As she stopped at the traffic light, two men approached from either side. One had a firearm. The man broke the window and pointed the firearm at the driver. The constable reacted swiftly and shot him.
The suspect was taken to hospital and is currently under police guard, while his accomplice fled the scene and is still at large.
The suspect is facing charges of attempted hijacking and possession of an illegal firearm.

“We are very proud of the constable from the drug unit and commend him for his bravery. He surely did not hesitate to serve and protect, even when he was off duty. Well done officer, you are a true hero,” the metro police stated in a press release.
Tshwane Community Safety MMC Alderman Karen Meyer was also extremely proud of the officer.
“This should set an example to other officers. The officer’s work will be acknowledged,” Meyer said.
“The department will work very hard to apprehend the other suspect,” the metro police added.
