Olievenhoutbosch resident behind bars for perjury

A man was arrested after falsely claiming under oath that he had been robbed at gunpoint in his home.

Making a false declaration under oath or lying about a crime can land you in hot water, as a 29-year-old man from Olievenhoutbosch discovered this week.

The man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for perjury, according to Olievenhoutbosch police spokesperson Constable Ulrika van Dyk.

“The man reported a house robbery which had allegedly happened the evening before,” Van Dyk said.

“He claimed at around 21:00 he was asleep in his home when a noise woke him up.”

“He reported to police that two unknown men were in his room and held him up at gunpoint demanding money.”

Van Dyk said the man went on to state under oath that the men stole R3 500 from him and a cellphone.

“However, the investigation soon revealed the man had in fact lied.”

“He was subsequently arrested and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court shortly.”

The police say perjury is “the unlawful and intentional making of a false declaration under oath in the course of legal proceedings before a competent tribunal”.

“The false declaration is made by a person who knows it to be false or foresees the possibility that it may be false,” explained Van Dyk.

Police issued a stern warning to locals not to report false cases or make false declarations under oath.

“Anyone suspected of this would be arrested.”
