UPDATE: Centurion rank ‘blueprint’ for future developments – metro

“As a department we are working towards ensuring it becomes policy that when you develop in the city you have to take public transport facilities into consideration.”

The Tshwane metro wants to use the new Centurion taxi rank as a blueprint for the future supply of public transport in the city.

Roads and transport MMC Sheila Lynn Senkubuge said the metro was currently working on ways to ensure all developments within the capital provided customers and workers adequate access to public transport.

Senkubuge was speaking at the sod-turning ceremony at the new Centurion taxi rank construction site on Wednesday afternoon.

“We want the new rank to serve as a blueprint for future developments in the city,” Senkubuge said.

“As a department, we are working towards ensuring it becomes policy that when you develop in the city you have to take public transport facilities into consideration.”

Senkubuge said developments such as malls and shopping centres often attracted increased numbers of customers and workers to the area.

“The majority of these people will depend on public transport,” she said.

Senkubuge said the department wanted the provision of adequate public transport facilities a non-negotiable for developers.

The multi-million rand state-of-the-art taxi rank on the corner of South Street and Hendrik Verwoerd Drive is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

It will cover approximately 10 000 square-metres and accommodate 55 taxis, office space for local taxi associations, 22 informal kiosks for traders and public toilets.
