Moot’s ‘Meerkat’ announced

Meerkat of the month is awarded to a person who participated in the most neighbourhood watch actions.

To bring a little more team building into AfriForum’s East-Moot neighbourhood watch, they decided to award the best among them each month.

The Meerkat of the month will celebrate the person who participated in most of its actions, said chairman Andries Opperman.

“The whole thing is a little bit of spirit building and camaraderie,” he said.

“The patrolmen and watch members are becoming friends and that community formation is invaluable – people are starting to care for each other again.”

This month’s Meerkat was Ruan du Plessis.

Opperman explained that there were many benefits that came with the award.

“This month, Ruan received an R300 gift certificate from Fonz’s Grill to take his wife or girlfriend out for a meal,” he said.

“All watch members must also address him as Meerkat for the remainder of the month.”

Opperman said Du Plessis would also choose, plan and execute one of its activities this month.

“He also gets a set of vehicle magnets to the value of R240, as well as a T-shirt sponsored by one of our community members with ‘Meerkat of the month!’ written on it,” he said.

“Finally, he will also be able to chase the watch chairman for 20 minutes like a drill sergeant with the exercises of his choice.

“He can use the opportunity to quell any frustration he has with the chairman,” added Opperman humorously.

Du Plessis said he was happy to be named Meerkat of the Month.

“Together we will definitely be able to make a difference,” he said.

Opperman said it was important for him to bring the community closer.
