North teen dances her way into the record books

Teen from the North win's bursary in international dance competition.

A Pretoria North teenager recently walked away with the title and a dance bursary at an international dance competition.

Nicole de Agrela (16), a grade 10 pupil at Eduplex high school recently danced away as the first South African bursary winner in the under-18 division of the international dance competition at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Nicole first participated two years ago and returned this year with a bang to score the highest score among the South African team.

She walked away with 1st place and is the first South African dancer to have moved to advanced level at the World Lyrical Dance Federation.

“Nicole received the highest score out of the entire South African team and received a full summer school bursary,” her mother Linda told Rekord.

Linda said all the European judges gave Nicole scores ranging from 95 to 99 percent.

“She just kept on pushing and her hard work has paid off.

“She is a strong, vibrant young lady and believes in motivating those that want to dance,” Linda said.

Nicole dances everything from ballet, contemporary, lyrical, acro, commercial, afro-fusion, jazz, and belly dancing.

Nicole’s love for dance came from her ballet teacher, Elaine Stefanou who has given her the foundation and influence of ballet. She trains twice a week, with choreographer Andre van der Nest.

Linda says Nicole’s school, Eduplex has supported her wonderfully.

“Especially her teachers, she has worked out many pieces for them and they have really succeeded in their dancing journey.

“She has been invited to the fully paid-for two-week summer workshop at the RAD in London next year.

“This is exciting news and only two dancers out of all countries received this bursary, South Africa – Nicole – and a young lady from Iceland.

“We [are] very grateful she is the South African girl they are offering this bursary to.”
