North police warns against latest scam

Residents warned about scam in which victim must pay for stolen vehicle to be returned by 'police'.

Sinoville police have warned residents of a new car theft scam doing the rounds in the north.

Warrant officer Johan van Dyk said victims of stolen vehicles are being contacted by phone and told their vehicles have been recovered.

The victim is then instructed to pay a certain amount for their vehicles to be returned to them by the “police” without the vehicle being booked into safe storage.

When the money has been paid, no further communication is received.

“The police does not render their services to the community in exchange for money or payment,” Van Dyk said.
