UPDATE: Taxi industry welcomes new Centurion rank

“As the taxi industry we are looking forward to seeing more developments like this.”

The taxi operators in Centurion are looking forward to having “a place of their own” when the state-of-the-art new rank opens early next year.

The R12-million rank currently being built on the corner of South Street and Hendrik Verwoerd Drive would ensure taxi drivers had a formal place to work from, according to SANTACO Tshwane spokesperson McDonald Makata.

Makata, together with metro officials and mayor Stevens Mokgalapa, attended the sod-turning ceremony at the construction site last Wednesday to mark the beginning of construction of the 10 000 square-metre facility.

“As the taxi industry we are looking forward to seeing more developments like this,” Makata said.

“We transport between 65 and 70% of the country’s workforce. Yet we are often not part of plans and developments like this.”

“Here the Tshwane metro has realised that and they have answered our call for better facilities in Centurion.”

Makata said the new facility would replace the current makeshift rank giving taxi drivers proper space to operate.

“This is our bread and butter,” he said.

“We are very happy to be part of this project which has finally included the industry in its implementation and execution.”

The new taxi rank is expected to be completed by the end of the year then launched in the first quarter of 2020.

It will accommodate approximately 55 taxis, office space for local taxi associations and 22 kiosks for traders and public toilets.
