Centurion man sentenced for life for raping minor

He followed the young girl and locked her inside, where he raped her and thereafter fled the scene.

A 21-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl in Olievenhoutbosch.

Abel Mutuse, who posed as a potential tenant before raping the minor, was sentenced at the Pretoria Regional Court last week Monday.

“The minor was left by her father so she could show prospective tenants rooms that were up for rental,” said the National Prosecuting Authority’s Hurbetin Phindi Mjonondwane.

Abel Mutuse came and enquired about a room to rent and asked the girl to show him the rooms.

He noticed that the girl was, in fact, left alone with only a younger sibling.

Mutuse asked to view one of the rooms, where he followed the young girl and locked her inside before raping her.

Afterwards, he fled the scene.

Mjonondwane said the victim alerted the neighbours and the community began searching for Mutuse.

He was shortly found and later handed over to the police.

“Her evidence was led with the assistance of state prosecutor Ashwin Ramnarian.”

Her evidence was also corroborated by a medical practitioner who confirmed that she was raped.

The court further heard how the minor’s behaviour changed after the rape ordeal, Mjonondwane added.

“The prosecution argued that Mutuse has shown no remorse for the crime he committed; and, therefore, deserved no leniency from the court. The emotional strain suffered by both the minor and her family was also highlighted by the prosecutor in persuading the court to hand down a befitting sentence.”

Mjonondwane said the court found the testimony of the minor and that of the other state witnesses to be credible.
