City taxi protest move to Marabastad

"Although all streets are opened, we urge motorist driving in that direction to avoid Bloed, Boom and Struben streets."

Taxi drivers in the Pretoria CBD have now taken their protest to Marabastad.

On Monday morning, the drivers had blocked off Boom and Sisulu streets, demanding that the police arrest alleged drug peddlers around the notorious Brown Street and Bloed mall.

“The protest that started last week after a taxi driver was shot and killed is still ongoing,” police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

“The protesters are currently walking to Marabastad. Although all streets are opened, we urge motorist driving in that direction to avoid Bloed, Boom and Struben streets,” she said.

“There’s high police visibility in that area and so far there hasn’t been any violence.”

Selepe said the protest in Sunnyside was also being monitored.

The protesters are demanding that police minister Bheki Cele should come to address them.

They also warn taxi commuters not to go to work tomorrow as no taxis will be transporting passengers.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Superintendent Issac Mahamba said that trucks and buses that were used to blockade the streets were hijacked.

“We are monitoring the situation to see what is their plan of action.”

Tshwane safety and security MMC Karen Meyer said law enforcement agencies were continuously monitoring the situation.
