UPDATE: Onderstepoort landfill rehabilitation long time off

It was suggested during a public participation meeting earlier this year that the space could be used as either a recreational park or a multipurpose waste facility, or be rehabilitated.

The rehabilitation of the Onderstepoort landfill site was still a long time off, a recent update by environmental consultants revealed.

This as Leap Environmental spokesperson Tinkie Kuhn said the new waste licence application would only make provision for the decommissioning process only.

Another application would have to be made to obtain a license to rehabilitate the landfill site before a third application would be made for potential land uses.

Kuhn said this was aimed at simplifying the decommissioning process.

“The integrated environmental authorisation application, which was submitted as part of the basic assessment, has been replaced by a waste license application,” she said.

Proposed alternatives after the decommissioning and rehabilitation were complete were set to be included in the end-use plan.

The partial closure of the Onderstepoort landfill site to domestic waste was enforced at the end of March while garden and building waste were expected to be taken in until the end of the year.

Its closure follows in the steps of Garstkloof, Kwaggasrand and Temba sites, which were already closed.

The landfill site was opened in 1997 and was initially set to close in 2016, but its lifespan extended to the end of 2019.

It was suggested during a public participation meeting earlier this year that the space could be used as either a recreational park or a multipurpose waste facility, or be rehabilitated.
