Animal fun day hosted in The Reeds

Various community-based organisations joined hands to host an animal fun day in The Reeds last weekend.

Various community-based organisations joined hands to host an animal fun day in The Reeds last weekend.

The day, which placed specific emphasis on dogs, was made possible by the Residents Association of The Reeds, Thatchfield and Rooihuiskraal (Rethro).

It was held at the Jacaranda College, Kolgans Park, last Saturday, and was attended by the community, according to Rethro secretary Hetta Scholtz.

“The main attraction was the microchipping of dogs and cats,” Scholtz said.

“On the day, 50 animals were microchipped including two cats.”

She said the day started with a demonstration by the metro police K9-unit in the presence of community services MMC Karen Meyer, region 4 MMC Dana Wannenburg and the Tshwane mayor Stevens Mokgalapa.

“The dogs and their handlers demonstrated searching for drugs and bombs,” Scholtz said.

“The demonstration ended with the enactment of a car being stolen and the ‘thief’ being taken down by the dog.”

The metro police equestrian unit was also present.

Food and drinks were provided by the Wierdabrug sector 2 CPF while various competitions were held and children’s faces were painted.

“Rethro wishes to thank the local ward councillor Casper McDonald for organising the VIP guests as well as the demonstrations by metro police.”

McDonald described the day as a testimony of what a united community could achieve for the benefit of all.

“It is my view that more activities like these are needed in ward 64,” McDonald said.

“It was amazing to see what community-based organisations could achieve together. The result was a morning enjoyed by all.

“I want to thank the mayor and MMCs Meyer and Wannenburg who attended. This was the first time a Tshwane mayor and MMC had attended such activity in Rooihuiskraal.”
