A local high school has taken a stand against gender-based violence following the spate of femicides over the last few weeks. Afrikaanse Seuns Hoërskool, announced on its Facebook page it had taken a united stand against gender-based violence.
Principal Peregrine Joynt told the learners during the Gauteng boys’ schools Inter High event.
“One of our school’s core values is respect for others – especially respect for our elders and women. Schools across South Africa have been taking a stand against gender violence,” he said.
“It is therefore with great pride that we can announce that every Gauteng Boys’ school represented here today has agreed to pledge our unconditional support to equality for all, especially women.

“As a tangible sign of our commitment to equality and to show our solidarity with the victims of gender violence, all athletes can on voluntary basis participate wearing a black band or ribbon around their arms or chests. We as boys’ schools endeavour to, as in the past, educate boys in such a way [that] they will treat everyone with respect and dignity, today and in the future,” Joynt said.
Violence against women recently came under the spotlight following the kidnapping of the Vanderbijlpark toddler, Amy-Leigh de Jager and the rape and murder of UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana at the Clareinch post office in Claremont, Cape Town.
Since then various organisations and companies have shown their support for victims of violence by wearing black on Fridays.
