VIDEO – Local book drive produces endless smiles
The drive was inspired by National Books Week’s celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The Donate-a-Book campaign by Rekord in association with SPAR and the SA National Book Development Council recently came to an end, yielding successful results to an inspirational story.
The drive was inspired by National Books Week’s celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and the hashtag #readbecause trending on various social media platforms to explain why reading for pleasure was so important.
Rekord visited the schools to which many of the books were donated: Shirinda Primary School, Uoana Primary School and Stanza Bopape Secondary School.
Stanza Bopape Secondary School learners in Mamelodi explained to Rekord why they like reading and why this generous donation would make such a big difference.

“We like reading because it broadens our knowledge about things in the world that we previously might not have understood, we are so grateful to Rekord readers for their generous donations, it will definitely inspire the kids from our school,” the debate team said.
The #readbecause campaign was born out of the need for society to collaborate to grow the culture of reading for leisure in South Africa.
Capital Media Group Editor Sunette Visser expressed her gratitude: “It is wonderful to see how the communities of Pretoria came together and donated so many books for the less privileged children.”
The parties involved would sincerely like to thank all the people who donated.
