A 22-year-old man has been arrested after he was caught allegedly in possession of three rifles believed to have been stolen from an industrial firm in Sunderland Ridge.

Erasmia police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said the suspect was arrested in Mooiplaas informal settlement on Wednesday

“An unknown number of suspects allegedly broke into one of the industrial firms in Sunderland Ridge in which nine firearms were taken from the safe.”

Following an intelligence-driven operation by members attached to Erasmia detectives (tracing team), one suspect was found and arrested after three rifles and 18 rounds of ammunition were found in his possession.

The suspect would also be profiled to establish if he was not involved in any other criminal activities, he said.

Erasmia police station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Thandi Mokgoetsi welcomed the arrest.

“The South African Police Service will at no stage stop but continue fighting the battle to ensure the removal of illegal firearms in the hands of criminals who are terrorising local communities,” Mokgoetsi said.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Friday, for the possession of unlicensed firearms.
