Heritage Day – start planting for a lasting legacy

Join the fruit and veg planting initiative in the north on Heritage Day.

Concerns over South Africa’s unreliable economic fortunes are putting increased strain on our agriculture industry. The price of fresh produce will increase along with other food, and farmers are afraid to plant because they are uncertain about the future.

“If it does happen that we experience a food shortage, I believe it will be everyone’s own fault. If we think about this happening, we should start to make provision as soon as possible. The answer is to start planting your own fruits and vegetables,” says Mariana Kriel, Solidariteit Helping Hand Gauteng North organiser.

“If it’s possible, you should try planting for the rest of your community too. Many people are planting on their sidewalks these days for people to take as they pass. With this I would like to encourage everyone to start planting and sowing now.”

On Tuesday 24 September 2019, Solidariteit Helping Hand will host an event encourage people in the community to plant their own fruit and vegetables.

“The aim is to encourage communities all over the country to make a sustainable difference within their community by ensuring food security and promoting a greener environment by utilising unused spaces or sidewalks,” Kriel says.

Kriel will transform her own sidewalk into a vegetable garden on Heritage Day.

The campaign will be taking place 406 Suider Street in Pretoria North at 11:30.
