UPDATE: North man wounded in attack recovering in hospital

The man who was attacked and shot when he opened the gate for his wife is recovering at home after surgery.

Honingsneskrans resident Peet Steyn who was shot and wounded in an attack on Thursday, is recovering in the Montana hospital.

Steyn was shot on Thursday morning on his north of Pretoria plot while opening the gate for his wife on her way to work. He was wounded in his left upper leg.

“They shot him and left him for dead. My mother says she sat on the dustbin and heard him crying for help, but she couldn’t help him,” Steyn’s stepdaughter Lizelle Nieuwoudt told Rekord.

“The bullet hit him in the upper leg near his groin and splinters went into his kidneys,” she said.

Nieuwoudt said her stepfather, who underwent an operation, was currently recovering in hospital. A pin was inserted into the upper part of his leg where the bullet shattered the bone. An additional plate was put in after doctors discovered his pelvis was fractured.

“The hospital said he would get back on his feet quickly after the operation,” Nieuwoudt said.

Nieuwoudt said she had a “feeling” to go back to the house where she lived with her mom and stepfather.

“On arrival at the smallholding, I fired a few warning shots before entering the premises.

“The house’s front door was still open. I then saw the garage door slowly opening. I also fired a few shots at the door.”

After Nieuwoudt made completely sure there was no one around, she armed herself and went into the house to check on the family’s belongings, feed the pets and to get clean clothing.

Nieuwoudt said the community told her that the suspects returned to the property to steal roof tiles.

“The suspects even stole my stepdad’s shoes.

“No one slept at the house last night. My mother (Hannetjie) is still very traumatised and I don’t believe she will want to go back to the house again,” Nieuwoudt said.
