It is a celebration of the different cultures, traditions and values that form the rainbow nation of South Africa.

Various events are staged throughout the country to commemorate the day.
The Department of Arts and Culture said the living heritage plays an important role in promoting cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace and economic development.
“In every community, there are living human treasures who possess a high degree of knowledge, skills and history pertaining to different aspects of diverse living heritage. It is therefore important for South Africans to reclaim, restore and preserve these various aspects of living heritage to accelerate the use of living heritage to address challenges communities are facing today.”
Facts about Heritage Day
– Most South Africans now unofficially call heritage day, braai day or National braai day.
– Braai day came about in 2005 when a media campaign was launched to rebrand the day.
– Heritage day was known as Shaka Day in KwaZulu-Natal, to celebrate the Zulu king, Shaka Zulu, who was instrumental in bringing different Zulu clans together to form the Zulu nation.
– The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) played a vital role in the renaming of Shaka Day to Heritage Day to accommodate other traditions.
– South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.
– Heritage day was first celebrated in 1995.
