Night march to ‘reclaim the streets of Sunnyside’

"The purpose is to declare war on violence against gender-based violence within the policing precinct.”

A march aimed at reclaiming the dignity of women in the country, was held in Sunnyside on Friday night.

Gauteng MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko led the march, together with law enforcement agencies and members of the community.

The match – held under the theme “reclaiming the night” – was held following several incidents of gender-based violence and other crimes against women and children, said Gauteng community safety spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba.

“This night march focuses mostly on victims of rape, domestic abuse, and violence. The purpose is to declare war on violence against gender-based violence within the policing precinct.”

Mashaba said the night was dedicated to women from across Pretoria to walk with freedom.

“We understand the issues facing this community and tonight we are fighting together with women.

“After this march, we are going to have more (of these actions) in other regions but Sunnyside is where it all starts,” Mashaba said.

The marchers assembled at Jubilee Park before walking to Bourke and Robert Sobukwe streets in Sunnyside.

Other teams embarked on a walk along Kotze and Gerald Moerdyk streets before heading back to the park.

Activists Refiloe Tshehla said the march was needed to raise awareness of abuse against women in the country.

“This march is about reclaiming Tshwane. We are ready to work hard to get the message across. It’s about time we feel safe in our own streets,” she said.
