UPDATE: Fatalities in north horror crash from the same car

Three minors and four adults died in the accident. Three other people were critically injured

The seven people who died in a multivehicle accident on the N1 highway on Friday was traveling in the same vehicle, it was revealed.

This was according to Tshwane emergency spokesperson Charles Mabaso who told Rekord that they were traveling in a Toyota Avanza when the accident happened.

Three minors and four adults (seven in total) died in the accident. Three other people were critically injured.

The accident happened around 11:15 at the Wallmansthal off-ramp in the north of Pretoria.

Two trucks and nine motor vehicles were involved in the collision.

It was thought the accident was caused by poor visibility due to veld fires.

In the meantime, the minister of transport, Fikile Mbalula has one called on a strict observance of all road rules following the collision.

“The country has recently experienced a spate of road crashes that have taken place in different provinces in the past few weeks,” the department said in a statement.

Mbalula has extended his condolences to the families of the seven people who lost their lives in the fatal accident and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

“We encourage all road users not only to observe, but also to obey all the rules of the road and ensure they behave responsibly at all times,” Mbalula said.

“Roads are a shared space that all users must utilise responsibly. Road safety is also everyone’s responsibility, without exception. It starts with you.”

The department said it will roll out its 365 Days Road Safety Action Campaign in line with the Road Safety Strategy which will involve strong elements of road safety operations and education and awareness throughout the country.

Mbalula has instructed traffic law enforcement to intensify stringent operations across the country in the effort to reduce crashes and deaths through among others, high visible policing and hush penalties including the prosecution of traffic law transgressors.

He has instructed the Road Traffic Management Cooperation to work with the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the crash and also the Road Accident Fund to assist the families of the deceased and injured.
