Centurion inaugural farmer’s market kicks off

A wide selection of fresh produce available to early morning customers.

More than 100 people braced the morning breeze and made their way to a farmer’s market for a selection of a wide variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, spices, herbs, and cheeses in Centurion.

Leriba Hotel events manager Andre van der Merwe said the market featured only fresh produce provided by 14 local farmers.

“Our idea from the beginning was to create a farmer’s market which featured exclusively fresh fruit and vegetables as opposed to a flea market.

“There is a wide variety of fruits and vegetables including fresh avocados and pecan nuts. Braai wood is also for sale.”

The market starts at 06:00 until 13:00 every last Saturday of the month, free of charge.

Cheesemaker Dean Lategan said the market was a perfect platform for the community to get fresh products.

“I didn’t know that retirement for me would be the beginning of a new adventure. After I went into retirement back in 2011, I started making cheese in the Klein Karoo.

“Following a massive drought, we were forced to close down for a few years,” Lategan said.

“Around last year, we reopened and we have been expanding.“
