West residents annoyed at growing illegal dump
An open field in Kraai Street was becoming a problem for west residents.

Illegal dumping in the west of Pretoria is driving residents round the bend.
“The problem just gets worse by the day,” Kwaggasrand resident Johan Coetzer said, referring to an open field in Kraai Street.
Coetzer and his family live across the road from the field. They discovered the illegal dump some months ago, after something gave off a bad smell in the neighbourhood.
“It started out small and people first started throwing away branches and garden refuse, but now things are getting terrible,” he said.

“Illegal dumpers even throw away carcasses. We discovered a dead cow in the field one day.”
Coetzer said other dead animals such as dogs and cats were also dumped in the veld.

He said the field had been fenced for a long time “but criminals stole the fence and gate, which now gives illegal dumpers easy access to the field”.
“They even come with trucks to dump illegally.”
Coetzer said it was “so difficult” to confront the illegal dumpers.

“If you do, they threaten you with a weapon, like a panga,” he said.
Acting ward 3 councillor Pastor James Ndlovu said he was unaware of the illegal dumping but promised to investigate.
He encouraged residents to report illegal dumping to the metro police.
“If possible, take a photo of the illegal dumpsters,” he said.
“Once the metro has been notified of the incident, they can respond and issue the necessary fines.”
