Hugo did not call the police

“It doesn’t bother me that the video went viral. If there is one thing I hope is that my voice will make people aware of the horrific effects of domestic violence on everyone involved. ”

Everybody wants to know whether Hugo actually did call the police, after a video of a fight in the driveway of a house in Pretoria North spread like a wildfire on social media last month.

The video of the fight was recorded by Marthie van Dyk, Hugo’s wife after the tenants across the road again made a commotion by fighting in the driveway.

“It’s old news,” Marthie told Rekord.

Marthie says the video was filmed more than a year and a few months ago.

She says Hugo spent time in hospital shortly before the incident.

Residents in the street say since the video has gone viral on social media there are many people driving up and down the street shouting, “Hugo call the police”.

Marthie said in the latest incident a police car stopped outside their house and played the Jak de Priester song, “Hugo bel die polisie” through their speakers.

Marthie says she is not someone who usually gets involved in domestic violence.

“That’s not who I am. Anyone who knows me knows I was so hysterical about the child,” Marthie explains about her reaction when she recorded the video.

“But there was a child present during the fight. My job is to build children, I work with children every day. My calling is to help children.”

“Yes, the tenants fought regularly. At that point, all the fighting was a big problem for us.”

Marthie said the people didn’t only fight on weekends, but sometimes during the week as well.

She recorded the video to send it to the estate agent who was responsible for letting the property.

On the day the video was made, the people seen in the video came to pick up a child from the tenants. That is when the first fight broke out.

The people in the car then left.

“We initially thought it was the end of the fight.”

Minutes later, they returned and a second fight ensued.

It was then that Marthie took her cellphone and made the video, hoping that the adults would stop fighting in front of a child.

That’s why, in the video, she hysterically tells her husband to call the police.

“All that went through my head at that point is that there is a child in the car.”

“It’s disturbing. Children do not belong in such circumstances.”

She feels the video is not newsworthy because she took the video to show the estate agent of the tenants’ behavior at the premises and not to humiliate people.

“It’s absurd that the video has become such a big story. Hugo says that the video went so viral is the height of common.”

Marthie said she has no idea how the video ended up on social media because she only sent it to the owner of the house and the estate agent.

She explained that she and Hugo initially thought that if they kept quiet the story will blow over.

“I think it’s time to move on. I’m sorry for my part in the video.”

“It doesn’t bother me that the video went viral. If there is one thing I hope is that my voice will make people aware of the horrific effects of domestic violence on everyone involved. ”

Marthie concluded, “Hugo did not call the police”.
