A Pretoria North man has been sentenced to five years in jail for an escape from lawful police custody.

The man – who faces two separate charges of rape – was sentenced in the Pretoria magistrate’s court in September.

Two of the five years were suspended.

The 34-year-old was arrested just days after he escaped while being transported back to the Kgosi Mampuru correctional centre after he appeared in the Pretoria North magistrate’s court on one of the rape charges in August.

According to a source, the arrest was made with the assistance of informants.

The police allegedly “slept in a vehicle” to protect the witnesses from the escapee whom they believed would harm them.

He was expected to serve his sentence in the prison he was being transported to when he escaped.

Meanwhile, the court orderly accused of assisting the escape was released on bail last month.

He was expected to return to the Pretoria North magistrate’s court next month.
