Moot project to bring Christmas cheer to children, elderly

The routes for the unique Pretoria children's Christmas project have been announced.

The routes for the unique Pretoria children’s Christmas project have been announced.

Every year for the past nine years, this project has brightened up many children’s faces during the festive season.

Project spokesperson Xander Loubser said the project will kick off on 17 December.

“This year, we will also do additional areas in the Moot,” he said.

The organising group will cover Danville, Daspoort, Booysens, Claremont, Hermanstad, Pretoria Gardens, Mountain View, Lady Selbourne, Suiderberg and Wolmer.

For the first time, they will include Mayville, Parktown, Wonderboom South, Les Marais, Eloffsfal and Roseville in their route.

Loubser said a group from the organising committee would, for the first time this year, also visit hospitals and nursing homes.

“This gesture is just to take Santa to the people who haven’t had the opportunity to come out for the event themselves,” he said.

He said he was grateful for the dedication of the project committee.

“It’s a whole week they give up before Christmas. This is usually a time for family, but they still make time available for the Christmas project,” he said.

Loubser said they needed a minimum of R100 000 to realise their idea for this year.

He said any sponsors or donations were welcome.

“The Christmas project has been reorganised as a non-profit organisation,” he said.

Every year, residents parade through the streets of Pretoria with lights and hand out parcels to children and the elderly.

“We aim to spoil 25 000 children and the elderly this year,” he said.

“With the support of our area’s emergency services, siren sounds of hope and a colourful tone that follows, we can distribute these parcels to the community and warm their hearts. ”
