NEWSFLASH: Security guard assaulted and robbed at Voortrekker Monument

"The robbers broke the security office window and stole the cash register and computer screen."

Three men – two of whom were armed – assaulted and robbed the security guard on duty at the main gate of the Voortrekker Monument on Tuesday morning.

“The robbers broke the security office window and stole the cash register and computer screen. They also vandalised the security camera at the gate and robbed the security guard of his personal belongings. Luckily he wasn’t seriously injured,” said Geraldine Paulsen, media and communications official at the monument.

Pretoria Central police issued a statement saying that the suspects fled the scene when the alarm went off during the robbery.

“Three unknown male suspects approached the security guard and took him out of the guard room. While the suspects were breaking into the cashier room, a security alarm went off and they fled the scene,” said Captain Augustinah Selepe.

According to the security guard, the robbers were not South African citizens.

“Although the robbers were able to destroy the camera, the police were able to obtain clear photos of what they looked like. People are urged to use an alternative gate, as it’s business as usual at the monument,” said Paulsen.

Police are investigating a case of business robbery.
