A construction worker, who was seriously injured while cleaning a cement mixer in the north of Pretoria last Friday, was “recovering really well” in hospital.

“We paid him a visit on Sunday at the hospital in Johannesburg where he is currently recovering. His family has also visited him over the weekend”.

The factory owners said they would not be able to give out more information regarding the accident until the workman’s compensation investigation is finalised.

“We are in constant contact with the young man, his family and the hospital.”

On Friday Shawn Herbst, spokesperson for Netcare 911 said the construction worker’s left leg was amputated after a cement mixer he was reportedly busy cleaning was accidentally turned on at around 13:00.

Herbst said advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilise the man.

“Due to the nature of his injuries, a Netcare 911 helicopter took him to a nearby hospital.”
