Ward councillor, CPF team-up to secure east landfill site

The group said there have been vagrants occupying the site illegally and living on it.

Pretoria east Ward councillor Daryl Johnston and the local CPF rolled up their sleeves to repair the damaged fence at the Garstkloof garden waste and building rubble landfill site in Elardus Park on Tuesday.

The group said there have been vagrants occupying the site illegally and living on it.

“The fence is being damaged by vagrants in an effort to gain access to the site,” Johnston said.

“To date, we have made two repairs.”

The site has been a headache to residents for years, who believed that the site was being mismanaged.

In 2017, the site caught fire believed to have originated from a pile of shredded garden waste.

Johnston said the illegal dwellers have been reported to the MMC for environment and agriculture.

“In the meantime, we will continue to repair damage to the fence in an effort to improve security,” he said.

CPF chairperson James Manners-Wood said the area was supposed to be closed and unoccupied, however ongoing occurrences of the fence being damaged were concerning.

He said the CPF would continue to monitor the site.

“We are working hard to keep our community safe and are fortunate to have the assistance of our local ward councillor.”
