East amputee’s mission to change lives of disabled children

Everyone is special and we all have different talents we could make use of.

A Nellmapius man living with disability has encouraged children living with disability not to give up in life.

Andrew Moeketsi (40) of Nellmapius extension 22, who lost his leg when he was shot in a car-jacking, is a motivational speaker and founder of a non-profit Moeketsi foundation.

He started the foundation to empower people living with disabilities, especially young children.

Moeketsi believes that everyone has a goal in life and they can do anything they want despite a disability.

“We do our best to show that you can achieve your goal regardless of disability. It is all in the mind.”

Before moving to Nellmapius, Moeketsi lived in Mamelodi as an “ordinary person” with ambition to make it and take care of his son and family.

Moeketsi said in 2013, a terrible tragedy happened to him.

He was shot in both legs during a car-jacking.

“I was seriously injured and doctors had to amputate my leg living me disabled.”

He recalls that life was not easy when he came out of the hospital, so it was up to him to take charge of his life or give up.

Moeketsi thanked God for saving his life and he took a decision to go on with life, despite his disability.

He said while in recovery, he had an idea to form a foundation to help people living with disabilities like him, and in 2018, he registered Moeketsi foundation with a focus of children living with disabilities.

“Everyone is special and we all have different talents and we should make use of them.”

Today, he uplifts disabled people around Gauteng by making special visits to give them hope that they could make something of their life.

The foundation helps people with a disability obtain crutches or wheelchairs and holds workshops to share knowledge about disability.

“Our wish is to get sponsors so we can be able to help the disabled people.”

He said families whose loved-ones were living with disability could also contact the foundation for one-on-one counselling sessions.
