Organisation makes matric dance dreams come true

“We selected him after we found that he was doing well in his academics.”

A local organisation has stepped in to make the matric dance dream of a Mamelodi learner a reality.

Non-profit Kurhula Matikweni helps matriculants who do not have the financial means to buy a matric dance dress or suit.

Mandisa Ngobeni of Kurhula Matikweni said the project is called “Help a brother and sister with matric make-over” campaign.

“Some of these girls and boys end up not going to the farewell due to their circumstances.”

Ngobeni said this time it was different as the campaign helped Ronald Mamogobo, a Grade 12 learner at Edendale Secondary School, with a date to his matric dance.

“We made sure that the partner had a full make-over, dress and even organised a surprise luxury car to drive them to the venue.”

The farewell was held at Batter Boys Lodge last Thursday.

“We selected him after we looked at his academic performance and found that he was doing fine.”

Ngobeni further said that the learner wants to study events management next year.

The campaign is to make a difference in the lives of girls and boys by not only giving them the opportunity to attend their matric dance, but also supplying them with an evening dress, tuxedo, dream car to take them to the venue, a partner, jewellery, bag and, where possible, shoes.

Ngobeni said they managed to get the community to donate a tuxedo, cocktail dress, evening bags, jewellery and shoes.

She added that the organisation was founded on April.

“Our young people are suffering from depression, peer-pressure, drug abuse, human trafficking and women abuse.

“Our community is quick to judge, rather than producing a solution. Therefore, we’ve created a platform whereby our young people can come to us when they have challenges or need any sort of help.”

Mandisa said their main goal was to bring the local community together to inspire them.

She said the next project would be the Back to School campaign, and pleaded with the community to donate school uniforms for primary school learners.

She urged the public to support such projects.
