SPORT: Downs score 16 goals against Seychelles team

The Brazilians now move to the next phase of the continental competition in great style and will now face stiffer competition.

Mamelodi Sundowns have eased into the last 16 of the CAF Champions League following their emphatic 16-1 aggregate win over Cote d’Or FC of Seychelles.

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane was satisfied with the way his side dominated both legs. His side won the first leg 5-0 away before finishing the tie off with an 11-1 victory in Pretoria.

The Brazilians now move to the next phase of the continental competition to face stiffer competition.

“I was not surprised by the score because I saw already in Seychelles that we had an opportunity to score early. What’s good about the game is that we spoke with the guys before the match that we need to practice some of the things we always do,” said Mosimane.

He said he was encouraged more by the desire from the players to try and improve the scoreline despite knowing they were home and dry.

“And because the resistance from the opposition was not strong, we achieved some of the things we are always talking about and planning to do. What’s more important is that you could see every time we scored there was an urgency to go again, which showed respect for the Sundowns badge and our supporters. That was very good professionalism,” he said.

“They really made sure they don’t play for ball possession and sit on the ball as long as we want. We had agreed that we are going to score,” Mosimane said.

Sundowns would now have a week’s rest before resuming their Absa Premiership ambitions next Wednesday against Black Leopards in Thohoyandou.

“It’s difficult to go there. It’s a new team with a new coach and that is never normal. What you will see is a team with a performance that goes lower or higher, but usually, it’s higher up because players want to impress the new coach,” said Mosimane.

Downs are fourth in the table but have played three matches fewer than table-topping Kaizer Chiefs, who are sitting on 19 points from eight games.
