UPDATE: Weirdabrug police shot by unknown attackers

Two Weirdabrug police officers on patrol were wounded when the unknown occupants of a bakkie opened fire at them in Valhalla on Tuesday morning.

Two Weirdabrug police officers on patrol were wounded when the unknown occupants of a bakkie opened fire at them in Valhalla on Tuesday morning.

“The officers were rushed to hospital where they are currently in ICU,” said police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili.

Both are said to be in a stable condition.

The pair was on patrol in a marked police vehicle when they noticed three bakkies approaching a red traffic light on the Old Pretoria Road.

“The bakkie at the front did not stop at the red light and then the officers decided to pursue it,” she said.

“But while they were driving past the other two bakkies, the occupants in one of the bakkies started shooting at their vehicle.”

She said one police officer sustained gunshot wounds to his leg and upper body, while the driver’s head was grazed by a bullet.

Acting SAPS national commissioner Lieutenant-General Bonang Mgwenya has condemned the attack.

She wished the injured members a speedy recovery and praised their commitment to justice.

“I am relieved they have escaped such an attack. They are the calibre of police officers we need in our ranks as they did not dismiss a road traffic offence as petty,” said Mgwenya.

“They did what they were supposed to do and followed the suspicious vehicle. Their bullet-riddled patrol vehicle shows that there are people who continue undermining the state’s authority by attacking our officers.”

She said the police would hunt the suspects down and bring them to book.

Mgwenya has instructed provincial police to implement a 72-hour plan to ensure that all role-players are roped in to investigate and trace the perpetrators.
