Gauteng matric exams to proceed despite load-shedding glitches

A total of 317 learners are scheduled to re-write their exams at a later date to be announced by the department.

The Gauteng Department of Education said Wednesday’s matric exams proceeded successfully despite minor delays experienced in some areas due to load-shedding.

On Wednesday, department spokesperson Steve Mabona said 26 of the 36 districts that took part in the Computer Applications Technology practical examination managed to complete the exam.

” Those districts managed to complete the exams with the use of generators which were on standby as a contingency plan, making the effects of power cuts minimal. Some learners from these centres were transported to other centres to enable them to successfully complete their exams,” Mabona said in a statement.

The 10 centres were unable to write because of load-shedding.

Mabona said 317 learners are scheduled to re-write their exams at a later date, yet to be announced.

“Today, 1 219 matric candidates are scheduled to write Information Technology (IT) Paper 1. We hope that there will be no disruptions encountered as a result of load-shedding. The department has, however, taken precautionary measures in the event of power cuts,” he said.

He said measures to be implemented by the department are:

– Quarantining candidates for up to two hours until the power is restored. Those affected will be credited with equivalent additional time.

– Schools will have generators on standby.

– Candidates will be moved to other centres unaffected by load-shedding.

– In the event that all the above fails, candidates will be released and will write a back-up exam at a later date to be determined by the department.
