“The suspect was detained at Pretoria West police station and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of drug possession and trade,” Mahamba said.

He said the metro police’s drug unit had arrested 292 people in connection with drug-related offences between January and September.

“The street value of the illegal substances confiscated between January and September amounted to R368 740,” he said.

Mayor Mokgalapa applauded the efforts made by the metro police which worked in collaboration with the SAPS for ensuring the raids were a success.

“This is a strong message to those involved in the illicit drug trade that no stone will be left unturned in pursuing them to face the full might of the law.”

He said the illicit drugs inflicted damage to the “social fabric” of communities and had no place in the lives of people in Tshwane.

“I urge the public to come forward with any information that can lead to the arrests of those involved in criminal activities,” Mokgalapa said.

Meyer said they were indebted to community members who joined the fight against crime and provided law enforcement with information and tip-offs.

“The recent joint steering committee set up with stakeholders in the taxi industry also provides an important platform to address this issue in particular.”
