Sundowns, Chiefs to fight it out at Loftus

The two teams faced each other two weeks ago in the Shell Helix Cup, with Chiefs humbling Downs 4-2.

Mamelodi Sundowns will host Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams faced each other two weeks ago, in the Shell Helix Cup with Chiefs humbling Downs 4-2.

Although the clash was not part of the Absa Premiership calendar, many Chiefs supporters believe that the Helix Cup was an indicator of what is in store on Sunday.

Downs’ fans on the other hand, say that the squad that lost to Chiefs was their B-team and that this weekend, the top players would seek revenge.

Sunday’s clash is expected to produce fireworks, as has been the case in their previous meetings.

Sundowns are five points behind Chiefs in the table but have two massive games in hand.

Coach Pitso Mosimane said at a press conference that he was not focused on Chiefs but the Highlands Park clash on Wednesday.

“Both games have three points if you win them but if you start focusing on the Chiefs game you are being emotional,” said the 55-year-old mentor.

“We must win the Highlands Park game because that’s our big game and we don’t have to beat Chiefs to win the league.

“After the Highlands Park game‚ probably my talk will change but at the moment it is Highlands Park. We played last year and never won‚ so we need to get the three points from Highlands and you are not going to get it easy.

“You know ODG (Highlands Park coach Owen da Gama) has his team tight‚ nobody scores easy against them‚ they are hard runners and they have a few players who played for us and they want to do well against us,” Mosimane said.

Should Sundowns beat Highlands Park on Wednesday, they’ll move second in the table and more importantly, two points behind Chiefs.

Last season, Sundowns drew with Chiefs 1-1 at home in the first round and won 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this year.
