Irene Christmas market kicks off in style

The market is open every Saturday until 16 December.

Arts and crafts as well as delicious food and live music were at the order of the day as the Christmas market officially kicked off in Irene on Saturday morning.

This as the market was filled with Pretoria residents looking to end 2019 on a high.

The market takes place at the Irene Village Market, but has lots of extra stalls and entertainment for families, said owner of the market Josene Groenewald.

“The market began 30 years ago. It was usually held at the Smuts house for 27 years until we moved here three years ago,” she said.

The market is now held at The Big Red Barn in Irene.

She said the idea of the market was to have everything local.

“When we started, we only had 23 exhibitors but the market grew over the years,” Groenewald said.

Groenewald said the market was one of the biggest in the country, offering a wide variety of items to locals.

“All our products are locally made. We also have fresh produce and vegetables straight from the farm. “

She said the market was named ‘Best market in Africa’ by Getaway magazine on numerous occasions.

Groenewald said in recent years, young designers have shown an interest in displaying their designs at the market.

“Any designer who want to exhibit their design products, they welcome to do so; we support local brands and local designers.”

The market is open every Saturday until the 16th of December.

One of the exhibitors, Rose Fenton, said her Saturday morning was well-spent at the market.

“This market has some of the best clothing, craft and arts you can find anywhere. I encourage anyone to come here and have a look,” she said.
