Coding, robotics part of SA curriculum in 2020
The department of basic education said coding was key in schools because it raised the awareness of the importance of digital and coding literacy in the 21st century.

With the department of basic education has already announced that coding and robotics would be part of next year’s curriculum, some locals school have already familiarised themselves with the subjects.
Ntswane Secondary School in Hammanskraal and Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Silverton are some of the few schools that have been benefiting from coding.

Earlier, basic education minister Angie Motshekga said they were ready to tackle the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
“The department has developed a coding and robotics curriculum for grade R to grade 3 learners, as well as grade 7, which will be put in place in January 2020,” she said.
“Workbooks and textbooks are digitised for easy access. We have digitised approximately 90 percent of high enrolment subjects such as mathematics, physical science, and accounting as well as 100 percent of workbooks and graded readers,” Motshekga said.
Eduplex Primary School head of computer centre Billy Brummer promoted coding after he was introduced to Cubroid Coding Blocks.

“It’s something new (coding) and I think the kids here will love it. If two children work on one kit, then there’s some sort of engagement and it can keep them busy while they are learning a lot at the same time,” he said.
Marilyn Morais, from Cubroid Coding Blocks, said it was important for the young ones to explore the world of coding in a very fun way.
“I think the education department is on the right track adding coding to the curriculum. Through Cubroid Coding Blocks, we are committed to working with the schools to ensure that the children get the best form of creative learning.
Cubroid coding blocks is a valuable tool that teaches children how to code, it is based on STEAM education. it is easy for the teachers to implement because it comes with a teacher’s guide and full curriculum,” she said.
