Centurion grade 1 learners ready for new year
Each child that enters the school this year is like a blank book ready to be filled.
The big day has arrived for many grade 1 learners as they prepared for their first day of “big school” in Centurion.
Two local schools were among those that allowed learners to visit their classrooms on Tuesday, to introduce themselves to their teachers.
Laerskool Bakenkop in Wierdapark saw eager learners finding their classrooms with parents.

“Each child that enters the school this year, is like a blank book ready to be filled with knowledge,” said school principal Willie Fourie.
Fourie, who has been teaching at Laerskool Bakenkop for nine years, said the grade 1 learners could look forward to being a part of the school’s age-old unique tradition.

“Every year, the grade 1 learners light a candle in their new classrooms as a symbol of the start of their primary school career,” said Fourie.

“When they finish grade 7 and are off to high school they go onto the stage in the school hall and blow out that candle.”
Fourie said his advice to the learners was to work hard as the future was in their hands.
“Make use of every opportunity that comes your way.”

Laerskool Rooihuiskraal, which has about 2 000 learners, also welcomed the grade 1 learners of 2020, on Tuesday.
“The learners can look forward to a great time here at Laerskool Rooihuiskraal,” said principal Ferdie Maree.

Maree said the school was celebrating its 30th year and around 150 staff were looking forward to the opportunities that 2020 will bring.
“Here at Laerskool Rooihuiskraal we want to change the way learners think when it comes to learning,” he said.
“We want them to focus on thinking outside the box.
“They are being prepared for the future despite the challenges that we face in our daily lives.”
