Moot Bible translation expert to host seminar
Rietondale resident Herman Grobler has made an intensive study of the different translations of the New Testament.
Reverend Herman Grobler from Rietondale, who made an intensive study of the different translations of the New Testament, will host a seminar at the Dutch Reformed Church Riviera-Jakaranda on 15 February and 7 March.
“There I will provide information on the origin of the New Testament and discuss the reasons for the differences,” he said.
“I will also deal with the norms for establishing a suitable Greek source text from which a translation can be made.”
The seminar will be from 8:00 to 14:00.
He will also discuss how a difference should be judged on the basis of the more than 6 500 Greek manuscripts as well as indicators from the context.
There are many concerns and uncertainties about the various Bible translations in Afrikaans, according to Grobler.
“Where there are differences in the Bibles, only one can represent the original,” he said.
“The others must surely be a forgery.”

He said in translations from 1983 onwards sometimes whole paragraphs and verses differ, that have been known for centuries in the Dutch state translation and the 1933/53 old Afrikaans Bible.
“The question is how does one determine which one is the correct version and which is the forgery?”
With “intensive scientific research”, Grobler studies the reasons for more than 150 differences and makes available the direct facts in a book, which was recently self-published by him.
“The famous verse in Acts 8:37, before Philip baptises the Ethiopian, does not appear in the 1983 Bible – ‘If you believe with all your heart, it is lawful. And he answers and says, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God’.”
“Furthermore, much of the well-known trinity text of 1 John 5:7 – 8 is left out.”
He argues that the old translation says in John 10:29: “My Father which they gave Me is greater than all; …”, while the new translation says: “Those whom the Father gave Me are the most important of all”.
“Is prayer and fasting necessary for the casting out of demons, or just prayer as stated in the 1983 Bible?” he asked.
Grobler said the problem is that both can’t be the original.

“But how should we know if we cannot study the Greek in which the New Testament was written?” he asked.
