Delight over speed bumps in Capital Park
In the past, Flowers Street in Capital Park drove residents up the wall as a result of speeding motorists daily.

To the relief of residents and some motorists, two speed bumps have now been placed in a busy street in the Moot.
In the past, Flowers Street in Capital Park drove residents up the wall as a result of speeding motorists daily.
On several occasions, residents were left without power for days as the electricity poles were taken out in accidents.
Before the speed bumps were erected, only rumble strips (riffs across the road to reduce speed) were there, but residents said that was not enough.
“After six years of requests, two speed bumps were finally placed in Flowers Street,” said local ward councillor Elma Nel.
Nel added that people must keep in mind when they build a speed bump, workers cannot immediately paint the wet tar.

“Temporary paint is used to make the bumps more visible,” she said.
“The permanent paint will only be done after a few days.”
Nel said metro police visited the area last Wednesday after receiving a large number of complaints about the construction of the speed bumps.

“Their finding was that the height of the bumps was in line with the city’s specifications,” she said.
She thanked the department of roads and transport which allowed the two speed bumps to be erected.
“I personally know of a few areas and streets in Capital Park where residents will want the same speed bumps,” she said.
Nel said the Capital Park sector police currently have application forms for speed bumps, which she has provided to them.

She said residents who wanted to apply can get those forms from sector police chairman, Cor Snel or vice-chairperson Anthony Smith.
“As long as everyone in the specific street signs and agrees to a speed bump, I will support it,” she says.
The sector police say they were delighted with the erection of the speed bumps.
“It was also requested that speed bumps be placed in Flowers Street between Steve Biko Road and 8th Avenue,” said Smith.
“We think it would be a great idea.”
Smith and Snel are currently working on the application for this.
