Moot elderly woman makes masks for residents
The masks were made uniquely with the residents’ names also engraved on the masks.
An elderly resident from the Moot has decided that she would not be shaken by the national lockdown period and started to help those around her.
Lyn Harmse (75) from Waverley made face masks for residents in the area.
“She started out small by just making them for residents in the street, including other elderly residents in the area,” said Adri von Wielligh of Bernina Moot, who helped with fabric donations for the project.
She said the masks were made uniquely with the residents’ names also engraved on the masks.
“From there on the project just took flame and so many people asked for masks,” she said.

Von Wielligh said Harmse gave the masks out for free to residents.
She said when they calculated how many masks have already been made by last week, they counted about 300.
“Ouma Lyn just cannot keep up with the orders,” she said.
She said Harmse started with the project just before the national lockdown was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“I can see that she enjoys it a lot to make these masks,” she said.
“She enjoys it because she is making a difference. She felt she needed to do something to help other people during this period.”
She said Harmse’s husband, Peet (81) even assisted with the project in his sickbed.
Von Wielligh said since last week they also started to help make the masks.
“We are enjoying it so much to be a part of this project to help those who need it,” she said.
“There are so many different types of masks already. We never realised the need for these masks would be so high.”
She said residents were welcome to place orders.
Anyone who wants to place an order for a mask can send an email to berninamoot@gmail.com.
“This good deed is truly an example of love and care and an inspiration to many,” she said.
“She was not put off by the lockdown and helped others in need.”
