Respect decision over Tshwane – political parties warned
"As matters stand, no individual has authority or powers to call himself or herself a ward/PR councillor."
The Gauteng government has urged political parties to respect the decision to dissolve the municipal council of the Tshwane metro and to place it under administration.
Local government MEC Lebogang Maile said the administrative affairs of the municipality now fell under the leadership of the administrator Mpho Nawa, supported by an eminent team of experts.
“The decision to dissolve the municipal council and place the municipality under administration remains undisturbed. We are happy with the work currently being done by the administrator and his team to stabilise and restore a clean governance, improve the city’s finances and accelerate service delivery,” said Maile.
“Parties across Tshwane need to embrace the decision taken by the Gauteng executive council. They should also support the work of the women and men who chose to sacrifice their paying jobs, by consciously electing to assist the provincial government in rescuing this strategic administrative city of our country.”
Maile said he received complaints that former councillors from various political parties have been issuing illegal trading permits to spaza shop owners and street traders.
He said the conduct of former councillors was “clear acts of criminality and undermines the decision taken by exco, supported by CoGTA minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), to dissolve the council of the city of Tshwane metropolitan municipality”.
“As matters stand, no individual has authority or powers to call himself or herself a ward/PR councillor. This is simply because the elected councillors ceased to be councillors after the NCOP and the minister gave the thumbs-up to dissolve the council.”
Maile urged the municipality to take the strongest possible action against those involved and report these acts of criminality to the relevant law enforcement agencies.
“The full wrath of the law should face those responsible, who are using the plight of informal traders to undermine the bylaws and the Covid-19 regulations.”
