Tshwane Police officer tests positive for Covid-19

The officer was deployed at the Tshwane Disaster Operations Centre.

A police officer posted at the Tshwane disaster operations centre (DOC) has tested positive for Covid-19.

Tshwane spokesperson Omogolo Taunyane-Mnguni said the female SAPS officer tested positive for the virus on Monday.

She said the metro was taking precaution to try and ensure that there were no further spread of the virus.

“As part of the daily routine, screening upon reporting for duty on-site continues which entails temperature scanning, completing a questionnaire and sanitizing,” she said.

“The DOC has been deep cleaned as an additional precautionary hygiene measure.”

Taunyane-Mnguni said the Tshwane metro was not mandated to conduct contact tracing but knew of 54 people who were directed to self-isolate after coming into contact with the officer.

The identified people will be isolated for 14 days and then get tested for the virus.

The Tshwane metro has since called on registered health practitioners to apply for the 140 positions that were created to help fight the spread of Covid-19.

“If you are a health professional anywhere around Tshwane, the City needs you,” she said Administrator Lebogang Mahaye

“We are urgently in need of auxiliary nurses, community health nurses and staff nurses to manage the clinical and operational aspects of a primary healthcare clinic in a defined geographic area in Tshwane.”

She said the metro was also in need of environmental health practitioners to support the municipal health services as well as the post basic pharmacist assistants to support pharmaceutical services at clinics

“All these professionals will be employed for a contract period from 1 May 2020 to 30 June 2020,” she said.

The Gauteng province accounts for the 1 720 of the 7 808 positive cases in the country.

The province has had 15 deaths and over 1000 recoveries.

Western Cape has recorded the highest number of infections in the country at 3 769.
