Police warn joggers and cyclists in Centurion

Cyclists and joggers are urged to be vigilant when exercising in the mornings as several residents have been robbed of running shoes, jewellery and cellphones.

Wierdabrug police have warned cyclists and joggers to be careful while exercising in the morning during the new level 4 lockdown regulations.

This as various robberies have been reported over the past week.

“Several cases have been opened whereby victims are targeted while exercising in the morning between 06:00 and 09:00,” said Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma.

Victims were robbed of cellphones, running shoes, bicycles, clothes and jewellery. The suspects reportedly fled into nearby bushes.

Targeted areas around Centurion include Rooihuiskraal North, Raslouw and Celtisdal.

Last week Monitor Net also urged joggers and cyclists to avoid hotspots in Centurion after a jogger was robbed of a cellphone and a bicycle was stolen.

“We want to warn the residents to refrain from jogging along the area behind the Amberfield estate after various incidents of robberies have been reported,” Monitor Net spokesperson JP le Roux told Rekord.

Le Roux said two incidents were called in earlier this week, one of a cellphone robbery and one of a bicycle that was stolen were reported to Monitor Net on 5 May.

“The robbers are armed and allegedly fired a shot this morning when the bicycle was stolen,” Le Roux explained.

Le Roux said the open field behind the Amberfield estate is a very popular spot for joggers and cyclists. He urged the residents to use safer routes with more “eyes and ears”.

He said the current hotspots where joggers have been robbed in the past week include Capensis Street, Apiesdoring Street, Ruimte Street and Philirene Street.

Monitor Net has supplied the following tips for joggers and cyclists exercising during the lockdown:

– Avoid quiet areas with no security or surveillance.
– Leave valuable items and expensive jewellery at home.
– Be vigilant about your surroundings.
– Avoid running or cycling alone; the bigger the group, the safer.
